Description

NARUG Lunch & Learn Series

Meducation®: Personalize and Simplify Medication Regimens

Presented by:

Charles Lee, MD & Jeff Flake

Summary:

Medication adherence refers to the extent to which patients take medications as prescribed by their health care providers. Non-adherence is estimated to cost more than 100 billion dollars in avoidable hospitalizations yearly.  A survey by the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) found that 76% of patients reported one or more non-adherence issues. This presentation will discuss medication non-adherence with a particular focus on addressing patients with low health literacy and limited English proficiency.  Interventions that address low health literacy, laws and regulations at state and federal levels, and potential technical solutions for multi-language prescription labeling will be discussed.

Key Objectives:

  • Attendees will be able to explain health outcomes resulting from an inability to understand prescription instructions due to low health literacy and limited English proficiency and proven clinical interventions
  • Attendees will be able to describe the current federal and state laws that require the provision of language services at pharmacies
  • Attendees will be able to describe the challenges and potential solutions to providing multi-language prescription instructions
